Olympics Countdown Reaches Final Straight with just five days to go until the opening ceremony of the London Olympics 2012, the countdown is well and truly on. The biggest festival of music and sport in celebration of the Olympics, Sheftival, continues to add acts to its ever-growing line-up as today it announces X-Factor winner Joe McElderry, and new pop band Tilly, will play on the Real Radio Main Stage at Don Valley Bowl, Sheffield.
Joe McElderry stole the hearts of the nation when he won the sixth series of the X-Factor in 2009 mentored by pop starlet Cheryl Cole. He went on to have a number one hit with Miley Cyrus cover The Climb before coming first place in ITV show Popstar To Operastar.
Joe’s second album Classic achieved Gold status after selling 200,000 copies worldwide. Joe will be bringing his unbeatable vocals and winning smile to Sheftival as he takes to the main stage on Saturday 4th August.
Also playing on the Saturday are three piece pop band Tilly, hailing from Bakewell in Derbyshire, and at just 17-19 years old they’re the youngest artistes to play the main stage.
Recognition for Tilly came about after winning a competition to write a song for World Peace Day. Tilly beat hundreds of entries and went on to perform at Peace One Day at the Royal Albert Hall. Critics have compared them to Blondie and Kate Bush, whilst fans draw similarities to The Tings Tings and Kylie Minogue. Whatever their sound, they’re sure to rock the Real Radio Stage at Sheftival.
Olympics fever has finally gripped the nation and Sheftival is expecting to welcome thousands of people from across the region to join in its unique festival of music sport. Sheffield local Olympiad Jess Ennis even found time out from her training to pose with our Sheftival board (see picture enclosed).
Sheftival is one of very few events taking place across Great Britain where you can try Olympic sports for free. Across Don Valley Stadium and the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield, festival goers can take part in touch rugby with the Sheffield Eagles, athletics, spar with a professional boxer, have-a-go on the pop-up hockey and crazy golf pitches to name just a few, or cheer on Jess Ennis on a giant 48m² screen or indulge in Sheftival’s live music programme.
Stretching a vast site of 25 acres, Sheftival boasts eight stages, over 1,000 performers, 25 sports, 80 bands, three markets, a huge fairground, gourmet food stalls, twelve bars, a giant bungee, free ice-skating, the biggest foam party in the country and a lot more. This is the Olympic Games done festival style and from as little as £10 a ticket, it’s priced to make every welcome.
